NAGINATA: A Metroidvania set in a Mythological Feudal Japan, full of Monsters and Demons
Naginata is a short 2D indie action adventure and platform game being produced by Calabi, and which has a prototype version published on December 16th this year, on the itch.io platform. The story of Naginata takes place in mythological feudal Japan, and you control a Japanese warrior who possesses a Naginata, a pole with a curved single-edged blade on the end, and your goal is to defeat the Fire Samurai and his army, and bring peace and prosperity to your homeland.
Naginata is a simple metroidvania but competent at what she does. Created for the game Jam Metroidvania Month 14, the game has a simple gameplay, very NES style, where you have a jump button and another for attack, and it works really well here. As for the graphics, the aesthetic, despite being pure and simple pixel art, presents a very interesting choice of colors, which reminded me a little of scenes from the animated series Samurai Jack, as well as some images of manga or common art that use these colors more strong. In my opinion, it was the right decision here.
The idea is the same in several metroidvanias: you have a map to explore, with locations that can only be accessed after acquiring a certain skill (in this case, after defeating the bosses in each area), in addition to increasing your energy bar by finding upgrades in various locations on the map, anyway, if you've played some metroidvania in your life, Naginata will make you feel right at home.
So far the game is still in development stage, and we don't know when it will be released. We can only wait for the launch. In the meantime, check out Naginata's gameplay and, if interested, play the prototype (access only via browser) by clicking on the links below.
