TSUGUNOHI: Watch the Lives of a Group of People Turn into a Living Hell in This Horror Game Series

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

Tsugunohi is a series of short third-person horror indie games produced by ImCyan and Vaka Game Magazine and published on August 13 of that year on the Steam store. Tsugunohi packs a total of 7 short J-horror games that show the lives of common people who end up getting involved in various supernatural manifestations and obviously finding a tragic end in the hand of these entities. The PC version features the seven episodes already known to those in the niche, and two original, brand new episodes. It is noteworthy that Tsugunohi became quite popular among a certain niche, a select group of Japanese indie game fans, and even became a live-action movie in Japan.

In terms of graphics, the game has something that was very characteristic of PC games of that time or consoles like Sega Saturn, for example. You control characters played by real people and that have been digitized into the game, in addition to the scenarios. The gameplay is extremely simple: you just steer the character (most of the time) to the left, but there are times when you use other arrow keys to move in various directions. The interaction is up to the Enter key or the left mouse button either to walk or to make the conversation continue. The progression (and story) of each episode takes place in a certain cycle of days: you start the episode normally, but as the days go by, things change and change until you reach the fateful "The Hexed Day" (hence the name Tsugunohi = Tsugu no Hi = The Hexed Day in Japanese), where the episode finds its ending.

By featuring a slow progression pace and a lot of on-screen text, Tsugunohi would certainly not be a game that would appeal to all horror fans, other than those more niche and Japanese horror fans. Despite that, it is an interesting game with a story and events that can trap the player who likes something different. Check out the gameplay of the episodes as they are added to the channel.
